Today, private Medicare Supplement insurance is available through various insurance companies. These policies, labeled Plan A through Plan J, are designed to pay the costs not covered by the Original Medicare Plan. Plan A provides a basic benefits package. The others include Plan A benefits along with a different combination of other coverage. Plan J is the most comprehensive of the plans. Both the letter names of the policies and the benefits they offer cannot be changed by any one insurance company. This provides for a smoother and more efficient market for such plans and makes possible greater study of the policies sold by insurance companies.
