What are Health
Care Discount Plans, Discount Dental Plans and
Discount Prescription Drugs Programs?
They are just like having a club membership or a special identification card that provides a discount for whatever services you may
need. The companies that organize these memberships have made arrangements with many groups of health care professionals such as physicians, dentists, pharmacists, opticians, health and wellness practitioners, and chiropractors. Also included are providers serving those with
long term care needs such as home health care providers, nurses, transportation services, hospices, and diagnostic center facilities.
Providers are willing to participate with large groups and discount plans in order to increase the number of people they serve. Everybody benefits from this kind of arrangement; the cost of your membership
card is small compared to the potential savings for you and your family.
Examples include a discount prescription drug
card, a medical discount card, a healthcare
discount card, a discount dental card and/or some
other health care savings plans. These are NOT
health insurance plans and are not intended to replace any
health insurance you may have now.
Please note that the cost of any discount dental,
health care savings plan or discount prescription
drugs plan has no direct connection with the total
amount of discount you receive. Higher cost plans
concentrate on offering a GREATER NUMBER of DIFFERENT SERVICES to the card holder; discounts range from
20% to 60%. Many times these plans may be used along WITH your regular
health insurance; receipts may be submitted to your
health insurance company for reimbursement with claims paid based upon your
health insurance plan; the deductible, the coinsurance percentage (80% by the insurance company/20% your out-of-pocket), the daily benefit amount (indemnity insurance) or whatever other
health insurance plan specifics are involved.
A pre-existing condition may not be covered by your
health insurance. You may want to use a participating doctor not a part of your HMO or PPO network. Your
health insurance plan may not include a number of
supplemental benefits, i.e. dental, vision, services of wellness practitioners such as dieticians, herbal therapy, biofeedback, a long term care provider network, or better pricing on prescription drugs. Perhaps your
health insurance has a high deductible.
Many families today buy health insurance plans to cover the essentials; today’s newer discount programs offer excellent value to help individuals and families pay for those services not covered by basic
major medical insurance. |
